SOOJEONG OH, PIANIST
Bio
Acclaimed for her lyrical tone and sensitive interpretation, pianist Soojeong Oh fills the hall with her warm demeanor and vibrant stage presence. Currently pursuing her MM. in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at the Peabody Conservatory, she attained her Bachelor’s at the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Marietta Orlov. Soojeong is also a former student of the Young Artists Performance Academy at the Royal Conservatory of Music where she studied with Dianne Werner from the age of 11.
Throughout her musical career she has immersed herself in numerous performance opportunities as a soloist, showcasing her love for the piano repertoire. At the age of 12, Soojeong competed in the OMFA provincial finals and at 14, finished as a provincial finalist at the Canadian Music Competition. Her other achievements include the Grand Prize award from the ALL TV Music Festival, the Best Pianist Trophy from the North York Music Festival, and the Canadian Composer and Most Promising Trophies from the Markham Music Festival. In 2009, she was awarded her ARCT diploma with first class honours with distinction on her RCM ARCT performer’s examination. Soojeong has also performed in numerous masterclasses and worked with such artists as Marc Durand, James Anagnoson, Jamie Parker, Jane Coop, Nelita True, John Perry, Andre Laplante, Yong Hi Moon, Douglas Humphreys, Robert MacDonald, Andrew Burashko, Boris Lysenko, and many others.
Aside from Soojeong’s solo piano studies, she has actively served as an accompanist for numerous choirs in the classical, sacred, and jazz genres. Throughout her years in high school, the Academy program, and university years, she has also had a chance to work with and accompany many different instrumentalists, enhancing her chamber musicianship. In addition, she has also had the opportunity to work with Min Kwon and Ya-Fei Chuang while at a collaborative summer program in Luxembourg.
While being an accomplished pianist, Soojeong also portrays interest in theatre productions. In 2004, she was casted in her first musical, The Last Empress, performed at the Hummingbird Centre in Toronto. She also took part in Markville Secondary School’s music theatre productions for 3 years performing The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Wonderful Town, and Sugar. Her passion for singing has rewarded her with a 5-year certificate from the Bach Children’s Chorus where she has performed in many concerts throughout Canada and the United States. She has also received an invitation to sing at the KBS Hall in South Korea as a guest soloist in 2005.
With her passion for performing, she has had the privilege to share her talents in Spain, Luxembourg, and South Korea, as well as in numerous concert halls in Canada and United States.
